Flooding can occur in any room or any level of your home, but basement flooding often happens more frequently due to its location and close proximity to the ground. Flooding can lead to a number of issues, including water damage, mold, and more. In today’s blog, we’ll focus on preventing basement flooding and explain a few things you can do to keep water out of your basement.
Redirect rainwater
Install gutters and downspouts in a way that will direct the water away from your home rather than pooling around it. You may need to use extensions for your gutters to ensure the water is directed at least three feet away from your foundation. Have your gutters and downspouts positioned properly is crucial, but so is keeping them clean and free of debris. Make sure to frequently check yours to ensure water can flow freely through them.
Install a sump pump
Sump pumps are a great way to keep your basement dry, as these devices pump out water that may find its way into your basement. There are different types, so be sure to consult with a plumber who can help you find the right one for your house and ensure its properly installed. If you already have a sump pump, that’s great, but you still need to maintain it. Make sure your sump pump is working properly and have it inspected at least once a year.
Landscape your yard
This may seem odd, but keeping your yard manicured is more than just curb appeal—it can prevent flooding, too! The slope of your yard plays a big role in where rainwater directs, so consider planting a rain garden, using heavier mulch, or installing a French drain. Unsure where to start? Check with a local nursery to learn about which plants are the best for soaking up water and preventing flooding.
Inspect your basement frequently
The best way to prevent flooding is to make sure your home is built to keep water out! A crack in a window, the walls, or foundation is a perfect way for water to seep in. Inspect your basement for any cracks and quickly and properly repair any you may come across.
